Thought for the day

From Gretchen:

When money or health is a problem, you think about it all the time; when it’s not a problem, you don’t think much about it. Both money and health contribute to happiness mostly in the negative; the lack of them brings much more unhappiness than possessing them brings happiness. One of the greatest luxuries that money and health provide is the freedom from having to think about them.

Well…even in light of my proclivity for wistful attitudes about the more serious nature of this life, I feel compelled to mention that I have heard this kind of quote before, but I have, more often than not, seen the words health and money replaced by sex. But the axiom still holds true in either case. And, as far as observational aphorisms go, one supposes that any basic human need could be inserted. Although, one must consider where Maslow might’ve placed these various elements on his hierarchy. But it’s hard to find an adequate balancing point when teetering so dangerously close to the First Noble Truth of the Buddha: Desire is the source of all suffering.
